Nope the yellow is the real deal. I have another one like it but not as much yellow shows that's why I posted this one.
I don't think there is any white on the last one but will have to check again when I get home.
Thanks!

Rhonda,
Check the base glass on the white one under a blacklight. Some will glow bright green. Those that glow are much harder to find. |

I went looking for your marbles in my marble books. I found them in Marbles, The Guide to Cat's-Eyes Marbles by Marlow Peterson and Larry Castle. On page 16, they show Peltier Cat's-Eyes. Row 3 are sunsets. They are yellow and white, bluebase glass and white, and a red-orange and white.
In Marble Mania by Stanley L. Block there is a pic on page 122 of Peltier Glass Assorted Sunsets. He shows yellow, orange, and red. There are white ribbons in all of them.
In American Machine Made Marbles by Six, Metzler, and Johnson on page 133 Sunsets are listed as a rainbow type. "Sunsets are those rainbows with a transparent base sometimes sparkling with air bubbles- with red, orange, yellow, white, or green ribbons." I've never seen a green one. Anybody have a pic?
Hope this helps. Sissy |

i have no idea what they're referring to with the green, edna!
i agree with the red, yellow or orange though. in fact, i always thought sunsets were pretty basic and one of the least controversial of the named marbles - clear base (not just transparent, but clear) with ribbons of white plus (either) red, yellow or orange.
i do love going through those old castle & peterson books. you gotta love them for being pioneers and trying to sort out the machine-made marbles back when hardly anyone knew what was what
as for the sunsets being 'cats', you can look at plenty of pelts and see a "cat's-eye" type of construction. any transparent base with ribbons that go deep into the marble will have a cat look.
has anyone else noticed how often a lone "clear rainbo" will show up in a lot with a bunch of bananas? |

Thanks Guys!
I have a bunch of the experimental "cat's eyes or pelts" shown in the cats eye book. I've sold some and traded some. The yellow one, the more I look at it could be a cats eye but just have never seen one with the red on top. And there isn't any white that I can see in it.

Here are some marbles that look like some kind of sunset. The ribbons are chocolate brown. I bought several of them and they were mixed in with newer marbles. They also have some features of late Vitro.

I think that the terms and definitions have evolved over the years, as I mention in my "You've Come a Long Way" thread. But I believe that the generally accepted definition now, of a Sunset , is probably what Marble Alan says on his site. IMHO
Quote: | Sunsets are those that have a transparent bubble-filled clear base with red, orange, or yellow and white ribbons. |
Although he doesn't specify "clear" as the base, I've been under the impression that if it's a transparent "colored" base, that it's not a Sunset. Also he doesn't mention the "Burnt Sunset", which has the almost brown ribbons with white.
I've heard many references to some of the Pelt Rainbos having a resemblance to catseyes, including this from Alan's site.
Quote: | Finally, Clear Rainbos are transparent clear-based, and have four or more different colored ribbons. Slightly resembling Markle King's Four-Color St. Marys Catseyes, these most often have a blue/red/yellow/white or green/red/yellow/white color combination. Almost all Clear Rainbos have thin ribbons, with around 10% possessing thicker ones. |
Here is a group pic of a few of the Rainbos with white ribbons that I've got . (These are different than the Pelt Snowballs with all the bubbles.) There are 2 in the middle row that have "twisted" ribbons, so it's hard to tell that they are Rainbos from these pics. Also the ones in the front row, have slight blueish or greenish color casts to their clear base. It's more pronounced in the pictures......... because in-hand, they are hard to distinguish from the true "clears". Also notice the various ribbon configurations. I've had many more that I've given them away.
Here's a group of orange and red Sunsets. They all have clear bases with lots of bubbles, except for the 3 on the left, bottom row. These are the types that I don't consider Sunsets, but some might. They have very light colored transparent bases. Some of them have a slight greenish or amberish color base. They do have the requisite white with red, yellow or orange ribbons. It's difficult to capture the true base colors in photos, so I tried taking the pics with and without the flash.
See why it's so difficult to make an ID from pics, sometimes?

Thanks Lizzy, that makes it easier. I do have some aqua and brown bubble rainbos like the white one I showed. It just never occurred to me to call it a rainbo because there's no color lol. Guess I'll be doin so now
