Many of the white-base Japanese transitionals (maybe 50%) have crear or translucent glass mixed into the base. Often it is hardly noticeable, but sometimes the striping glass mixes with the clear in a strange way, producing unusual effects. Here's a 1.125" example that has blended nicely, the next is a 11/16" that has blended in a strange way. ... Roger

Looks almost translucent, think no light shines through?
I have a few myself but not so nice as yours.

Something else,it has been my observation that some of the Japanese one are as nice or nicer than the German ones, but of course thats a personal taste.
For example this three 5/8 ones are Japanese.

And this one is an 1 inch Japanese,it's a whirling one.

Here's an 5/8 odd one,you hardly can see it's a transitional, think this one is German

I've always felt that these Japanese transitionals have a certain charm and stand alone as a 'type' and definitely Japanese 'till I'm persuaded otherwise. And I like the idea of accepting Larry Castle's effort to pin them down. David
