During the civil war there was a severe coin shortage, and many businesses put out tokens to be used in commerce. Some were similar to the indian head cents of the time, but there was well over a thousand different designs and varieties, usually with a patriotic theme or as an advertisement for a particular business. Not many people are aware of them, so they can often be found at a coin shop for $10-$20, or on e-bay for a few dollars. These make simply wonderful birthday presents, I would imagine. (Note - please never clean or polish old coins. )
Thank you for looking,
mike b.

It's not what you might think. The person making the die spelled "spot" wrong.

Migbar,
Just found this post!!

This is the only Virginia token, an R8.

I collect most pre-1900 tokens as well as Bryan Money.

It is my most rare piece, my wife wanted to kill me when I bought it. Had to sell some other stuff to pay for it.

I have had a hard time finding them in the wild lately. Most of my usual haunts are now posting everything on eBay.

This "slabbing" mania has almost killed the raw coin market, no one wants it if it is not slabbed.

Do you collect a specific series or state?

I don't agree.....yours isn't slabbed, and I want it !

I have just over 100 civil war tokens, mostly patriotics because they seem to be more common and less expensive than the store cards, but I collect them all, and any other tokens or coins I can lay my hands on.
I have a limited budget, though, so I usually have to trade marbles for them.

That's an obvious opening if I ever saw one!

I have a good number of patriotics, do you have specific dies in mind? I'll shoot you a PM with what I have.
