Hi All, Zora from UK here. I started collecting when I was 9ish and the fad hit our school. Then it was ordinaries, chinese and oldies and some were bigseys, I chased any that seemed more beautiful or unusual than others. By 11ish no one played marbles any more so my much loved collection lay dormant for years with just the occasional look over. About 5 years ago I was introduced to the net, discovered ebay and very soon my collection grew. Now I tend to collect old hand-mades and other old marbles I like the design or pattern of, or anything I havent already got. As a low budget collector, my faves come from car boots, fairs and the odd ebay suprise. _________________ Ziggyzora |

hi zora! welcome to the board
if i remember correctly, they have "boot sales" in the UK which are kind of like our american "flea markets" but instead of setting up tables, people park and sell things they've brought in their trunks (boots). sounds like a very cool set up with lots of good deals to be found!
anyway, thanks for saying hello! we'd love to see some of your marbles.

Hi all. My name is Pat and I live in southwest Missouri. It all started with a bubble gum machine that someone gave me about 25 years ago. I thought
that it would look cool full of marbles, so I set out to fill it up. many flea markets, swap meets and garage sales (no internet then) later I filled the
thing. Then I made the mistake of finding a book (Grists Big Book of Marbles) and reading it. I have been hooked ever since. Although I have had the marble addiction for many years, I have also had a small business to run, so my marble habit has suffered. Now that the nagging business has been put to bed, I can concentrate on marbles. I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Thanks Chris, here are a few quick photos. As you can see there isn't much organization yet. But I am slowly working through the piles. I haven't
had much time with the new camera so any closeups will have to wait.
I think you can see I over filled the gum machine!

Hi & welcome Ziggyzora and Pat.
Pat, I see you have some contemps. If you're ever down around Springfield, go to the Bass Pro Shop and look up Jerry Capel. he blows glass there and would probably whip ya up a marble to your liking.

Hi Everyone!
I'm brand new to this site so I thought I get right down to business and make my initial post! I saw a reference to Marvelous Mibs at I Antique Online.com and came over to check it out. Looks like a great, helpful community where I can learn more about the marbles in my hoard.
I've admired and purchased marbles for a long time, motivated by the same feelings toward marbles as I have toward buttons. I just love to spread them out and marvel at the variety...then pick one up and explore its distinctive patterns and colors. I can't say that I'm a collector...YET...since I have so little knowledge about marbles. At this point I guess I'd have to say I'm an accumulator. Once I learn more about marbles then I'll promote myself to Collector!
So, am I in the right place? How do I begin? Can y'all recommend a really good book or two? I'll bet Marble shows are the best venues in which to gain knowledge but I seem to have missed all of the big ones...are there smaller marble shows, or regional gatherings that I might attend either in Michigan, North Carolina or somewhere in between?
I've gathered a bunch of marbles over time, and I may have a treasure or two in there, but I wouldn't know it if I did! As a starting point, suppose I spread them ALL out on tables...how would y'all suggest I initially sort them?? Any ideas would be gratefully received. I'm so in the dark!
Thanks for the opportunity to join your group. I look forward to sharing with you and learning more about our common passion.
Sincerely, gratefully...
Julie |

Hi,
I just joined, but have been collecting vintage mibs for years. I'm hoping to learn how to take better pics of my mibs, as well as just join in the good conversations!

Hi guys. I guess I should start by saying that I am the newest member to join marvelous mibs, and I am an antique handmade marble collector from the UK. I have not been collecting for as many years as some of my fellow marble collecting peers, but some of my marbles are as nice as they come. Though needless to say, there are many areas still to be covered. I like to collect very rare and unique examples, preferably in as good condition as possible. And I am always looking to add to my collection.
I hope to meet new people like myself that share the love for these great pieces of art.
All the best to all. |
