A comic book store was going out of business in town, and everything was 50% off, so, I went in and bought a price guide...when I was browsing thru it, there is an advertisement for Morphy's AQuction house..and in the picture it has what resembles some sort of Onion Skin...it doesn't give the size, or condition, as they are just featured items that have been sold...it states that this marble sold for fourteen thousand , three hundred dollars...$14,300.....could this be true???

here is a better picture

Yes that marble brought that, plus I think a buyers premium. I had the pleasure of seeing that one in person, left me speechless. Bill

What type of onionskin was it and why did it sell for so much?.....was it the size???.....sentimental reasons?.......bidding war?
$14,000 is quite a bit to pay for a marble!

It is beyond my realm of reasoning as to why it would sell for $14,300...Fourteen THOUSAND dollars???

I can go to the site with the catalog link, but I can't get them to open??

Seriously,.. that amount would cut what I owe on my house in half. However, to have that kind of cash for a marble, ya probably would be living in a more exspensive house....LOL

I had saved this picture from a Morphy Auction of an Onionskin that sold for $13,750! I don't remember any of the details though...........size, condition, etc.

I believe that it must be the same marble. I found the text that went with the copy of the picture that I saved from the "liveauctioneers" database (which was where I got the $13,750 sale price.........strange, isn't it?). Maybe this explains the record price?

Quote:
2-13/32" End of day onionskin. Appears to be the middle marble of the two end of cane marbles in 44 and 45 above. Spotted color effect on off-white base. Color spots appear to be outlined in black outline for an even more dramatic effect. Truly one of the best examples made. Huge marble! A few very minor reflections and one scratch. (9.4 Condition).

EDIT: The quote above makes reference to there being 2 other same cane marbles in lots 44 and 45. Maybe the one that you posted is from one of the other lots. Looking at it closer, the pattern on the one that you posted appears slightly different........or it could be a different angle.

EDIT#2---Maybe the price difference reflects the buyer's premium or the other fees?
