After seeing a Spiral sell for $570.00 the other day (I was figuring $300.00 or so) I got to thinking what are the hardest colours to find in this type of marble. Here is what I came up with.
12 White
11 Blue (dark or shades of darker blue)
10 Green (dark or shades of darker green)
9 Yellow
8 Light green
7 Orange
6 Two distinct colours (not including ones with trace lines of white they don't count in my books)
5 red
4 Sky blue
3 Oxblood
2 Powder blue
1 True 3 colours
This is just a personal observation based on years of Spiral stalking. Are there any I missed? and would all agree with this? I know some will disagree with my placing of powder blue before Oxblood, but I have to say I have seen dozens of Oxbloods sell and very very few Powder blue. That being said I have seen way fewer sky blue ones sell either. What are your personal observations? In this list I grouped 2 distinct colours as one. I understand that a green and blue would be harder to find than say a single colour red but for the sake of the list I did not get into the colour combos. |

I haven't really kept track but I do collect multitwist corks and there are more multitwist types in the spirals than other corks (another thing for you to track...). I wonder about red being tougher than 2 color ones. I 'think' I see mire red than two color (discounting the white trace ones you mentioned).
By the way, do 'spirals' includes snakes, augers and the ones in-between, as long as they have a clear base.
What about ones in other colored transparent base glass? Where do those fit in? |

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN AKRO SNAKE GRRRRRRRRRR!
Just joshing of course but I have often wondered why people continue to call them that. Marbles with a clear base and coloured ribbon are clearly marked in the salesman sample box as "Spirals" If you asked a saleman in the 30's for a "Snake" he/she would look at you like you were from another planet and ask if you knew how to read. To me the only time snake applies to Akro is when it comes to the ribbon construction ie: "Ribbon" "Auger" or "Snake" ribbon construction. Could just be me but if Akro bothered to make boxes and clearly name each type of marble in the box, the names should have stuck.
I would have no problem flip-flopping the red and 2 colour types on the list. I would think maybe that the yellow and white combo might be easier to find than a red but the others would not. Yeah flipping those two on the list makes sense.
I have noticed that Spirals do twist more than say an Onyx. I had a wicked 5 twister orange at one time but sold it. Kicking myself now but at the time the $85.00 seemed pretty good. I have seen a few multi twists in the Spirals.
Ones with a coloured transparent base to me are Onyxes as per the salesman boxes again. Granted those all have white ribbons, and the term "Hybrid Onyx" does not seem right to me for the ones with other than white ribbons. They are not easy to find those ones. They are another topic for another day. But I call them Onyxes. I do not perscribe to the name "Perfections" for an onyx despite the fact there is documentation calling them that. I figue that was just some name thought up by some snot nosed kid to win a contest. Stupid name if you ask me. I'll go by the book and call them what they were first called. Sorry I go by the BOX not the book hehe. |

A true 3-color would sell for over $1,000. in mint condition (depending on the eye appeal). I know of one that sold for $1,200 roughly 10 years ago. |

I would say yes. Popeyes are affected by the spinner cup actions depending upon wear on the cup - so there will be a reasonably wide variation in construction. |

Ah touché Buddy (ok how do I put that accente gou tick over the e?) Never mind. Buddy does make a good point. There is no such thing as an Akro Corkscrew. Somehow I think it will be hard to change the masses on that one. Wonder who came up with that name?
I would really like to see a $1000.00+ Spiral. Do they look like my avitar? That would be cool. Here is a link to the auction that just ended. I hummed and hawed over wether it was a defective Popeye that lacked white? The blue looked too different from Popeyes I have seen. It does not quite match the blue on my blue and orange Pop.

EDIT: Hi Dave, it's Lizzy sneaking into your post. 'accente gou tick over the e' is courtesy of me. (In case you're wondering how I did it, I've got a little utility add-on in my browser that lets me write HTML for forum posts.) |
