As some of you know, my brother is selling off some of his extensive Akro collection to help pay for his other addiction----vintage VW Bugs (pre-1957). So, as I'm sitting here taking pictures of many unusual 'dug' Akros to list on ebay..... I thought that it would be a good idea to post them here in an "ongoing" gallery of sorts. Sort of like I had started at Lou's Marble Connection, but haven't been updating.

If you have any that you want to post here that you know are 'dug' Akros, feel free to do so. If you have a question about whether yours is a 'dug' Akro...........it's probably best to start a new thread.

Also feel free to use save these pics or post them elsewhere for informational purposes. I just don't want them posted in "Study Hall". Smile

Here's the first few:

I imagine that this one below was "dumped" because the thin strands of Oxblood weren't applied evenly. Notice how it didn't 'stick' to one side of the marble...........almost like it's rubbed off. I've never seen this pastel color combo in an Akro Oxblood patch, has anyone else?............I wonder if it was an "experimental" type?

The base on this one is a transparent red, although it's a little 'dense' and doesn't show up as well in these photos.

Very bubbly clear base with a little 'oven brick' inclusion!

Here's one that many would ID as a Vitro. Wink

Those Akros with the V on them are around--I have a couple of dug ones. One I have is white with a large purple V on it which was dug here at the plant. Then I bought one (advertised as Akro oxblood) that is very similar for comparison. I don't know about the latter, but the two are strikingly odd. I'll try to get some photos up.

Since we're here discussing Vitro and Akro, I've wanted to ask why some people are starting to call those popeye patches (blue and yellow) Vitro. There were thousands of them dug here--I've heard that Akro boxed a lot for other companies (Master, for example), but never Vitro. Seems a long way away to box their marbles. Master was just across town . . .

Here's a photo (not the best quality) I just took of those two marbles. The one on the left was dug at the factory--the purple isn't showing very well; the one on the right I got offline. I'll post better photos of them when I can. Smile

For some reason the "Popeye Patches" were attributed to Vitro and when Marble Alan put this info on his website, it became even more confusing.

From his Vitro page:
Quote:

MISCELLANEOUS PATCHES
In addition to the aforementioned patch style marbles, Vitro produced many more that have yet to be categorized properly. This lack of categorization may be due not only to the fact that often they resemble Akro Agate patches, and certain patches from each company are often mistaken for one another. One good example is the "Popeye" patch, which has some of the same color combinations as the infamous Akro Agate Popeyes which formed patches because the cup creating the corkscrew effect was not spinning at the time of production. The Vitro patches that resemble these are worth much less than their Akro counterparts, and can often be distinguished from Akro examples by their obvious seams.

From his Akro page:
Quote:

PATCHES

In basic terms, an Akro Agate patch marble is a corkscrew that didn't twist. Therefore, one may find marbles that have the same colors as many of the corkscrews but instead of spiraling from one pole to the other, there will simply be a short strip of color(s) on the base glass. They are generally considered to have been produced by error. These are rare, and are most often seen in Popeyes. Blue/yellow Popeye patches are the most common, thanks to a recent find of many thousands of them by diggers at the old factory site. Other Akro patches were purposefully made by the company; these were marketed with names assigned by Akro Agate.

There are some Vitros that are similar to the Akro Popeye patches but they are obviously different (IMHO).

Here's a Vitro that is somewhat similar to a Popeye Patch (not really the best example as there are others that are even more similar).

Now.......these below are all from the Akro site. They were all found in the same 'spot'. Some of these are the traditional "Popeye Patches", while others have only 1 color besides white & clear.

This picture was taken by Bill Tow of an "odd dug Akro".

Here's one of my favorite types. It seems that not that many are familiar with these dug Hand-Gathered Akros and good photos are especially difficult to get. This photo by Alan (marblealan) is of a purple one that he had listed.
