In this group of black & red Akro corkscrews is (what is probably) a newer Marble King (definitely not an Akro). It is the one in the bottom row..........far right. My brother had it mixed in with these corkscrews in a bag for a number years.

I realized how often I hear people say things like, "This couldn't possibly be a new marble...........I know old glass and this is old." Or "I know my glass and colors and this is definitely Akro, Peltier, etc. glass." It's usually from newer collectors that think that they've got this "ID thingy" down-pat. Wink

Anyone else have any other pictures that illustrate the same thing?

I'm not sure if this is what you mean Lizzie, but just yesterday, I was going through the marble books, and it is so confusing to me to see marbles that in my opinion, look so darn close to the ones I have, only to post them, and have people tell me they are vacor or jabo?? or wv swirls lol
It seems like the more I learn, the less I know.
the first photos are from the book "Collecting early Machine Made marbles"
and the pictures below them are of my marbles, no wonder newbies get confused

the following are my marbles

I understand exactly how frustrating it can be to try and ID marbles from those pictures in the books! Believe me..........my brother reminds me all the time about how when I first started collecting, I swore that I had a rare marble". I'd read the description and looked at the picture in one of Grist's books and knew that I'd gotten lucky! I had put it in a little baggie labeled "Rare Christensen Orange Peel". Imagine my chagrin when after a while I realized that it was a new black foreign patch type marble! Laughing

Anyway I can why you'd see a resemblance between the pics in your book and the marbles that you're showing. However, yours appear to be WV swirls..........maybe some Alley in there. Here are some much better pictures of the CA American Agates. They are mostly hand-gathered (if not all) so you can see the "9 & Tail" construction on them. In some of them, the base glass has an opalescent-type quality to it also.

These are all from Marble Alan's auctions.

Not sure where I got these last 2 pictures........maybe Galen posted it before on LOM?

Me too! Thank you Lizzy for id'ing 2 of my red/whites a while back as German slags. I have another 2 which are also a bit different from my pack, though different from each other, and wondered what they are, hope the pic works.

Well.......ZZ...........it appears that you have 2 "Drizzle" marbles. Laughing

Actually, the one on the left looks like it could be a CA American Agate.........and the one on the right........maybe a CA Bloodie.

But..........I'll defer to the others for right now. I'd love to hear what they think. Wink

P.S. ZZ, part of your picture's URL got "dropped" (or lost)..........so I think that I found the right pics and posted them.

Oh my......now that I look at the pictures again...........I'm thinking that the one on the left may be one of those red & white hand-gathered transitional types.

Someone help! hehe

Thank you for re-doing my pics. I had to get help from OH just to get some on as I keep missing the moment. A while back someone showed me how to upload from 'tinypics' but I couldn't find it tonight - would be really grateful to see this info again. Great topic, still could go anywhere.... I just latched onto the red/white bit.

I just included the info about tinypic.com in the photo uploading tutorial. Smile Here's the link (it's the last post):

I am not seeing American Agate in those 2 marbles. (I could not say no with 100% conviction from the pics)The White does not look correct . Maybe a type of crease pontil on the left and I really can't tell on the right marble. Peace,Galen

One on left seems to be a messed up Pinch-pontil. Here's a nice example of your point about glass colors. Left is (I think) Champion swirl, Right is a corkscrew. ...Roger
