On Pete's board he brought up the subject of larger Popeyes, which led to a discussion about contemporary makers producing some in the neighborhood of 1" or so. Got me to wondering if anyone has any Akro Popeyes that large. The general consensus was that 3/4" or slightly larger was what most have seen. I sure would like to see any examples that are much larger than 3/4". I have seen some Akro "Sparkler-types" in the larger sizes but they ((IMHO) didn't quite meet the Popeye criteria (clear matrix, filaments, etc.) Follows is Marble Alan's definition of a Sparkler from his old site. Obviously, the information about the the distinguishing characteristics being the shades of colors involved and the number of colors........ has not been up-dated I know that we've all seen many exceptions to this definition.

Sparklers were Akro Agate's only marble that was manufactured with the "injection" method, where colors were actually injected into the clear base. This was essentially the same technique used to produce catseye marbles, which came much later and which were not produced by Akro (since the company folded before they became popular). Sparklers are often mistaken for Master Marble Sunbursts, though this should not happen, as Sparklers always have at least five colors 9with rare exceptions) while Sunbursts have no more than three. Also, the colors used in Sparklers are very bright, whereas Sunbursts are normally duller or more earth-toned. Typical Sparkler colors are red, yellow, orange, green, blue, and white, and these will form a wispy core in the marble. Less often, the colors will be in bands. Sometimes these colors come almost to the surface while at other times they are closer to the core. Alan B. (marblealan) |
The photo below is of a group of my brother's larger Sparklers. The one in the center is 5/8" and is there for scale. There are a few that are around 3/4" and (if memory serves me correctly), a few slightly larger than that. Unfortunately, I no longer live in his house...............so I can't lay my hands on them without driving 4 hrs. hehe
SO, if you have any pictures of examples to show, it would be greatly appreciated by me.........and I'm sure many others. If you are new here and need help with uploading your pics, just send me a PM and I'll walk you through it. _________________ Lizzy
