I found this article interesting, thought some of you may also. I don't know why it says "part 2"...I found it in an old magazine from the 70's. hope its readable.

those pieces looked really nice, but the illustrations can't possibly do them justice...does anyone have photos of ones they collect?

Very interesting. thanks for sharing.
I was kinda suprised to learn the furnace(s) were fired by coal.
(I guess I assumed all furnaces were NG fired back in the day)

"in coal-oil.etc.-
fuel"

wonder if that meant coal oil (not to be confused with kerosene or lamp oil)

or, coal and oil. etc. -fuel ?

"once he accompanied Mrs. Lutz, wife of a glass worker...."
wonder is there is a connection there?

natural gas probab not available then and electricity was a fledgling industry....coal and kerosene prob the industry standard to get them btus...in eastern penn theres lots of antricite......dont get real hot like the soft coal found ibn the pittsburgh #8 seam...

Definitely an interesting article and some beautiful art glass! I love reading historical stories that give you a glimpse into the day-to-day activities of long-gone eras. I think it's a form of voyeurism. Laughing

Also that paragraph about "Intemperance" was kind of funny...........how he had to fire those guys for 'partying on the job.' hehe

I agree with Lizzy about old articles, I have a diary from the railroad, in which it says a certain person was "not hired because they were female"...lol

in this article I liked the march 24th insert, on the second page, about the guy from Germany going to teach them how to color glass.

you know that is one of the only reasons I was going to post this article, I was going to ask if there could be a connection between the workers name and the term......but then , the more I thought about it, I came up with the conclusion that (and I am only speculating) lutz is just sort of like adventurine, and something that has been around since time began, and I thought I would get laughed at for even suggesting it...sooooo
