Yes Chris...........that is mean. Laughing

I think it's kind of funny (yes, I'm mean too. Wink) when someone that is buying something for what they believe is it's 'show-off' factor (particularly without doing the necessary "homework" that most of us do)...........and then ends up paying too much for "not the genuine article". Twisted Evil

However, there's always the new, enthusiastic (albeit naive and perhaps also new to eBay) collector that is doing their "homework"...........and sees a vintage/antique marble listing that they believe is "the real thing". Those are the ones that I hope don't end up spending too much to learn a lesson. I also hope that it doesn't "sour" them so much that they decide to not continue collecting.

I guess it also just irks me that some of these scammers seem to continue unabated on eBay and continue to profit by their deceit.

i'm sorry - is this mean? i still feel like if someone is spending $185 on a marble they don't know much about, then it's their own fault for getting ripped off!

it just seems there are some people who spend big money to get "big time marbles" they think they can show off, and they're so into the status of it, they're willing to skip the learning part to jump straight to the showing off part.

i think you should spend big money on a marble you know enough about that you can appreciate what you have, and feel like it was worth the money because of your own appreciation, not the "glory" you just bought.

Some poor sap used "buy it now" on one for $185. Greedbay really makes it easy for scammers. Art

I remember that scammer when their ID was Tianie24 and they had a bunch of torch mades that they claimed were laying in a barn in Wisconsin for 100 years or something like that! Mad There were several discussions on the boards and people emailing them but it was obvious from their replies that they weren't interested in "the truth".

You can see from their feedback where some folks were scammed.

I haven't bought one of Freds' marbles in several years but I'd guess about $10 or $15.
Several years ago she used the handles "Tianie24" and "oldstuff357" Both accounts were suspended.
So much for eBay and their fraud controls. I called and actually talked to a rep. and got a brush off.

looks like she's hoping for some nibbles from people who don't know any better. gotta love the slippery disclaimer: "I AM NOT SURE THIS MARBLE IS FROM THE 1800s LIKE MOST OF THE OTHER MARBLES I HAVE HAD LISTED AND WILL BE LISTING , BECAUSE THIS ONE IS SO CLEAN THERE ARE NO CHIPS OR EVEN FLEA BITES."

i am not sure. then why make those three auctions private?

good catch, art. here's the link to her listing page:

http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/dj-trace-e

p.s. how much would a properly id'd wilganowski marble of this type go for?

PostPosted: Wed Jan 28, 2009 7:32 pm    Post subject: Be careful what you buy

Watch out for seller dj-trace-e. Deals a lot in WWII German coins but also some marbles. Currently listing some authenic German swirls but also 3 Fred Wilganowski contemporary lutzes with pontils put on with a dremel tool.
They're the only ones listed that have "Private" buyer ID and the seller knows exactly what she's doing. She's sold several over the years for hundreds of dollars.
I'm ashamed to say she's located in Wisconsin.
Current listings are #'s 260353229459 260352537243 260352535027.
Be careful. Art
