Every summer I direct an archaeological excavation in Belize Central America. We recently recovered this marble at the Maya site of Cahal Pech. It came from a level that dates to approximately 800 BC. This one is about 3/4 inch in diameter and was made from a conglomerate stone with shades of pink, tan, yellow, gray, and red. In previous years we have recovered approximately 20 other marbles. They are made of various materials including fired clay, limestone, chert, cave pearls (a very rare cave formation), and even more rare conch pearls. All recovered artifacts are property of Belize. After the analysis is complete, they will probably be on display in the Belize national museum.

Ooooooooh! I'm awestruck to think about the history behind that beauty. You lucky dawg...........getting to be involved in fun like that!
Thanks for sharing that with us, Jim. I'd love to see other excavated items (even if non-marble related) if you able to. Just stick an O/T in the title and post away! _________________ Lizzy

well very good as they are hard to even view as our local museum does not even display and marbles . A few years ago at Amana Bert Cohen or some one he knew brought there African trade beads and a box of glass marbles that were BC . can not remember the exact story but was there and got to take a few pics . As far as the year it was the same year Roe Purser came as the quest speaker . Mike

I once saw a marble that was made of stone, and had etched patterns that were similar to the wall paintings figures (petroglyphic) found in prehistoric caves in France. The collector who owns it is such an honest and sincere person, and the story about how he obtained it is so convincing, that I am sure it is an authentic prehistoric marble. If I can ever talk the owner into letting me take a pic of it, I will post it for you to see. ... Roger |
