While looking up the info on the Alley patch marbles, I started thinking about how much has changed since this book was published. The pages below are from Greenberg's Guide to Marbles, c. 1988.

In the introduction to the machine-made section below, it gives an overview of the important types of machine-mades. The categories are not broken down by manufacturer, but but "types". The chart below that shows the types that were considered "collectible". It makes reference on the previous page that although there are hundreds of types of machine made marbles, very few are considered collectible at this point. Only those types are shown on this chart.

This explains the similarity/difference between a Master Tiger Eye (this section is from the catseye section of the book) and catseyes.
Then it makes reference to the fact that Vitro made a "Tiger Eye" type also, but since examples are not available, it's not known whether they resembled the Master version.

In the next two excerpts, it explains that the transparent swirls (apparently what we now call slags) are "Akro swirls" and that slags are "opaque swirls".

Here's a description of what sounds like the Master brushed patch marbles. But it's obvious that they're not sure who made them, having only seen them in the Akro Hy-Grade packaging at this time.

A good bit of the machine made section is devoted to clearies, game marbles, frosted and carnival glass marbles. The only Pelts that are identified as such in the book, are these "Deco Gems" and a Big Value box with Rainbos, identified only as an assortment containing approximately 100 marbles.

Although this book contains much information that is considered out-dated now, I purchased it because it contained a good bit of the W.V. marbles companies' history in it.

Just wanted to share some observations with you guys. Smile

lizzy, that's what i was getting at in rhonda's pelt thread. the older books are still great resources for certain things, but like you said...we've come a looong way in sorting out all the fumbled guesses that the machine-made pioneers put on paper for us.

I've noticed that even in the relatively short time that I've been collecting, theories, terms, etc. have changed and grown. Seems that there's new information being discovered all the time! Or as in the case of Sandy's post about Alley patches...............old information being recognized as significant/noteworthy now. Smile
