Two level, open panel onionskins are very rare. Here's pics of one (that also has mica on both levels). I have seen large marbles before that have had a large chunk chipped away, obviously to turn it into a paperweight. Once I had a 1.75" precision indian (bright orange and blue bands) that was otherwise perfectly mint, except for the big chunk that had been whacked away. ... Roger

well this has me looking very close as when I got it I thought it was polished because of the flat spot but I put under the light and it for sure has never been polished , even the flat spot has some small damage . I also found three pieces of mica in the blue . I think I have heard that some of the bigger marbles were made to be paper weights?? If it was ground flat later it was done a very long time ago. Onionskins were a not a too rare type of paperweight. As were many other styles found in marbles. The best sulphides are actually paperweights IMO. I had one that was a little runaway boy with a knapsack on a stick over his shoulder. Paperweights were usually used so the quickest way to age the bottom is look for random direction varied size scratch marks. They should be numerous and noticeable. The drinding marks will all be the same small size and usually follow a pattern. Peace,Galen

I'd call it a Submarine onionskin and I think it was originally a marble which got a large chip on one side and that side was then ground flat to make it into a paperweight. I've seen this done to larger marbles before.
I've got a 2-1/2" submarine onionskin with 3 floating panels. Very nice type of marble.
here are some pics (next to a 1-1/2" ribbon lutz in blue glass):

btw, I've send you a pm about your marble/paperweight!

The rest of the marble doesn't look polished, with the cold roll / straw marks. Nice twist, one of the pontils should show a bit of evidence like grinding/faceting. Can't tell from the pics, but nothing unusual about the twist other than being a real looker? Some nice other examples too Very Happy
