What is the common or accepted ethos on agate or other gem stone marbles?
I have managed to find a few amongst all mine, and a couple of them are really nice.
Are these collectible as marbles, or do they have their own catagory, or are they even associated with marble collecting?
I would think they were scarce.

Hiya Doogle,
Looks like a nice group of stones you posted. They are marbles alright and should be displayed with your collection. Yes, good stone marbles are scarce. To a marble player a 3/4" agate would be the top of the line to use for a shooter.
I have always liked agates. Here are a few of my hand faceted dyed ones:
Back in the day, Hand Ground Agates were among the most expensive of marbles to purchase. Costing way more than large sulphides or swirls.

hipocritter, thanks for the info. I put a uv light on the white marble and it lights up, but I could swear that this marble is not glass. Do you know if any of the agate marbles are uv sensitive? I know that their are a lot of minerals and crystals, like flourite, that light up. _________________ Don't Tread On Me |

Got me on the uv question.
You appear to have carnelian, maybe rose quartz and something like a striated white agate(I see lines in that don't I?).
Yes, stone marbles are cherished by serious shooters although stone marbles comprise a small segment of the marble collecting public. It's all about glass or so it seems.
About 17 years ago I bought a doz. different mineral marbles ea. in sizes from 5/8"- to 1" and a KILO of each. Really! A photo of a representative set of the twelve is shown in Marilyn Barrett's book "Aggies, Immies, Shooters & Swirls." (1994) They were mostly mined in No. Africa and ground and polished in India. Four or five of us went in on the overall purchase but my share was a Kilo ea. of the 12 different varieties. Cool! David |
