This is one of my fathers marbles. It has the look of an auger, but I do not know the type. I have been pondering if I should have this polished down just enough to remove the damage so that the internal spirals can be properly seen. It bothers me that this marble is in this condition. I would like to see how it might have looked like when it was new. I know that this process removes glass, and thus part of the history of the marble, but I don't ever plan on this marble going anywhere except to my daughters whom I know will always keep it. It seems to feel right to make this decision, but I have seen some ugly posts, but they all involved actual buying and trading of un-disclosed polishing. Would a polish bring this marble back to life or would it remove to much glass and ruin it? What do you all think?

get it polished if you want IMO. While its never a good idea to polish a minimally dinged valuable marble or to polish to deceive why not get it polished it if you want. And if folks would take the time to really look and learn what polished mibs look like the problem wouldn't be becoming what it is. (I see more and more on peoples tables at shows.)

if your dad played with it...leave it alone.,...its got character as it is and you could imagine the good times your pop had with it....it would lose its provanance if it was polished.....not all marbles have to be mint ....

That is what I have been mulling around--I have a lot of my dad's marbles, and they are all in bad shape...so I thought this particular one would really clean up nicely. I will for sure leave most of them alone, as they do have a lot of value to me just by looking at how much they were played with by dear old dad.

Thanks for your support and care.

It's a tough one. I once considered buying a polishing machine('round 1992) but then decided that it would be the last thing that a dealer in marbles should have in his home. Would make me suspect!

I did have an elephant sulphide polished which I gave to my daughter for her elephant collection. Her marble collection mainly consists of serious contemporary ones that I was buying during the early 1990s.

There's sometimes though when you just have to see what God intended with that little marble especially when it has sentimental value. It's almost like an itch you can't reach.

I say go for it!
