Sometimes a hand made with real unconventional patterns are referred to as end-of-cane or near-end-of-cane since the pattern is all messed up or there are missing bands etc.
With the onion-skin types you see more, perhaps since the style is abstract enough that a single pontil design was more widely accepted.
What you don't see too often is a true single pontil latticino, divided core, ribbon core etc. I'm not talking about one with a pontil that's all bubbly glass from overheating, or canes that ran out and came to the surface like a fountain or a flower. I mean the ones that looplike a horseshoe, like if you were to take a standard 2-pontil marble with north and south pole, and the poles (so to speak) are pulled together at a single point or pontil.
To make a long story short, I saw one the other day and hadn't seen another like it and wondered if anybody else had. It's beat to crap but was/is an amazing marble. Sorry for the long post, but figured that the people that frequent this site are tolerant enough to discuss cool marbles. Pictures to come shortly, feel free to share your single pontil marbles in the meantime?

know that i do know thing or 2 bout handmade marbles. first off, there is no such thing as a true end of cane marble. there are those end of cane pieces, but they are not marbles. maybe no one else will but i call them what they are; first off cane marbles. there is only one of these per cane of glass, so they are hard to find, even rare. i've never found one in the wild. all that i have are from greed bay & running rabbit. seen a site the other day marblealan was talking cane-cut marbles, he said canes can be 20 feet long, that may be, but had to giggle picturing a man trying to cut mibs from a 20 foot cane. i think after making 20 foot canes they probably cut them into easier lengths to work with, 4 to 6 feet. me working with cold glass for over 25 years as a glazier, know it's easy to make a scratch on those 20 ft. canes every 4 to 6 ft. apply pressure to the back of the scratch and it will snap right were you made the scratch. so you have the glass decoration inside the marble terminating at the end. when you then heat the end of that cane to the point it becomes pliable press it into the cup of the marble tool (the tool is like a pair of tongs with a cup on one side with a blade on the other) squeeze the tong and twist. you have the first marble cut from the cane. the end you pushed in the cup, that is the pressed pontil and the decoration inside comes right to the surface of the marble. the opposite side is the cut pontil. please forgive this long rant on end of cane mibs, or first off cane as i call them. |

Hey that1, i missed it! i do think it is a first off cane, the difference being that the cane had a tail that looped back on itself when pressed into the cup. it is the only one i've seen. like dubby says kewl! |

It`s a bit over .75 inch.
Thanks for the comments. When I picture a marble cane yes there are two ends. I suppose a first off cane could also be considered a marble made from one of those two ends (ie: the beginning-end of it, and not the end-end of it , if that makes any sense) |

Hey that1, Hey Chris, yes & yes they are cut from the end of the cane, the begining end. several people over the years have said oh the last marble cut from the cane. so have always pushed the first off cane thing, but thinking about it guess they could flip the cane around and make 2 per cane, so i'll just shut-up now! very unusual mib and a good thread! |
