I found this pair of marbles in the wild about 20 years ago. I had just started collecting, and I was then convinced that the red was oxblood, but of course it is just a very dark red transparent. They have always been among my favorite machinemades, but I don't know who made them. Any ideas? (5/8"). ... Roger

The kicker here is *20 years ago* or I would have guessed Jabo too because of the construction. LIke Chris said, the glass quality is NICE. Hey, Vitro? Didn't Jabo buy the machines and used them till they wore out..or one the succeeding compaines after Vitro, til Jabo took over? I admit that I am lousey with History.

vitro morphed into jabo-vitro, but i don't remember exactly when (i'm sure it's in the books, but i'm feeling lazy)

(i'm still thinking the glass doesn't look as rich in these)

| If there is any clear transparent glass beside the trans red, then I will go Euro. If not ????. That is nice looking glass. Also making me think Euro. I guess Euro is my guess? |

i was lucky to catch WVRon while he was online and asked him to comment on this marble. he gave me the ok to post his response:

This may fit as Dave McCullogh was plant manager at Champion and now also plant manager at Jabo. He makes the decision what cullet to mix to get the color swirls he wants. I see a lot of Champion and Jabo that are very near the same.
Dave was and is today very good at copying older Ravenswood,Alley,Champion etc. He made some Jabos,in 2003 that were confused easily with good popeyes,and many had a good or decent cork pattern. At the factory without the little white hit marks,many had the popeye traits,looks,requirements,some corks,and some were sold on ebay and at shows as popeyes.
He wanted to run some brown base Ravenswoods,they were coming out to good,to near the old ones so i ask him to change the brown base color and he did. He made the brown base with colbalt blue swirl and the brown base with emerald green swirl.
I do not know this marble as any of the other swirl makers,mainly because of color combo. My thought is Champion.
I am not a big firm believer in the european theories. If euorpean what company? Where? When? No one has ever answered that. May have been some made but no big numbers. If no one thinks its a possible WV swirl (most times when they are good colors and patterns) they say euorpean. Most all WV swirl companies,shipped marbles to Europe,and elsewhere overseas. More Ravenswood marbles went overseas than stayed here. Almost all the Davis marbles went to Puretio Rico,etc,etc.
Most facts,some my opinion. |

| i agree that for some less-experienced collectors, "european" is the new "champion" as far as being the default guess. but i personally see a very distinct look on the few i will guess euro on, as i know dave has (way more than most of us, i think, being that he sees so many of the marbles that come from europe) so maybe he can give some thoughts on where the euro machine-mades come from. |
