I like slags, but I have never figured out how to tell the difference between a hand-gathered Akro and an MFC. What do you think on these?

first clue if you have a red one is that MFC didn't make red marbles other than oxblood.

the next clue i use (which i totally made up) is that the akro 9's seem to be more elongated - almost like a 4. mfc 9's seem to be more circular.

don't know how that pans out in real life......but since we know your red isn't MFC, and your white is really close-looking, i'd guess akro on both.

how does everyone else decide?

I had heard that about the shape of the 9 thing and mentioned it to a group of older collectors at a show. They all gave me a funny look and shook their heads.

I've noticed what Chris is talking about on quite a few hand-gathered Akros........ but of course, there's lots of exceptions. It's probably one of those things that you can use to help steer yourself in the direction of one maker or another.

There is however (IMHO) a classic MFC "look" to the pattern of a "9" on some mibs. It's almost unmistakable but it's hard to describe............more rounded looking or something.

To confuse matters, there are all those hand-gathered marbles that came out of the Akro digs. Many speculate that some or all of them are really from the MFC stock that Akro bought and sold, before they started their own production.

In closing, it's probably safe to say that there are always going to be those that we'll never be able to tell the maker.

BTW, great mibs, Chuck! Smile
