I had the chance to dig at the Alley dump Site and never realized that Alley did in fact make patch marbles.
They were literally all over the place!

Here is a pic of the 3/4" patch that I found....
(As Sami informed us....This type was known as an "Akro Experimental" before this all came to light)

Here is the cullet, Marbles and Marble halves that were also found at the site....

this is so awesome, sandy! these have been stumpers for so long. even les jones told me he was never sure who made them, never having found them in original packaging.

i've always loved them. the colors are dreamy. cool beans for you that you have some cullet, too!!

Yup, Sandy...........thanks for posting this. This is the stuff that you won't find in the books. Smile

I wanted to add a few thoughts to this and hope that maybe some others might be able to enlighten us even more.

I've wondered about these particular patches for a while. Here's a picture from an old Block auction. Probably how some IDs get established and taken as gospel.

Click thumbnail to enlarge.

Oh............Sandy, are yours fluorescent? None of mine do. BB says that the one in his auction is on a "vaseline" base. I wonder if he means that it has a "vaseline colored" base and not necessarily that it glows. Laughing

Now in these pics, the two marbles in the rear were recovered from the Akro digs. They appear different than the type that Sandy is showing. The patch is outlined in (what some call) "oxblood" and are irregularly shaped, sort of like a Pelt Peerless Patch. The base is different and has almost a filament filled look. I haven't found any exactly like the type Sandy is showing in any of our dug Akros. Has anyone here?

The one in the front row, on the left, appears closer to the one that Sandy is showing. It's the one that I've been wondering about the maker. I believe that the one on the right (bottom row) is a Vitro, espcially because the construction is similar to the Vitro (IMHO) patches below these.

These are the Vitro patches.

Any other information, comments or observations are welcome!

Very Cool Lizzy!
Thanks for posting this information!

I can see the obvious difference in the Akro and Alley patches.

(Actually, I'm thinking Virto didn't make this type.
I'm wondering if anyone dug these up at the Vitro site?)

I've only known this type to be Akro experimentals before I realized Alley had made ones very similar.

p.s.
nope!...mine don't florescence either.

AH-HA!! Idea Somewhere in the back of my mind, I kept thinking that I'd read somewhere that Alley made a patch marble............but thought that maybe I'd imagined it. But I went looking through all of my books, stored text docs., etc. and lo and behold, I found it! Smile

Here's a page from Greenberg's Guide to Marbles (c. 1988). I'll bet the description of the "patched opaque-blue on white body" is the type that Sandy has dug up. Other descriptions of color, etc. in the book are similarly very generic.

Some more food for thought..........here's some pics from one of Bob's (paleopal/vintagemarbles/nutzforlutz) auctions of pretty one that he labeled an Akro. I'd be torn between Akro and Vitro on this one. Anyone else got any input?
