Steve, I don't know that much about them either...........although I'm pretty sure that yours is Chinese. I wish my mom was still around because she could tell us more about it...........she specialized in Asian antiquities.
Anyway, the link below is to an ebay auction showing a pair with a similar design.
The stylized markings on the side of yours are actually the same Chinese characters shown on these that are in more of a "block" style.

I know a bit about it.
It is heavy porcelain hand painted in the Canton Blue style (definitely Chinese). It is a householder's ginger jar. Ginger, and any other root vegetable is placed in the jar with slightly moistened sand. It will keep for a very long time in hot climates without refrigeration.
The leaves in that pattern symbolize vitality or regeneration. They made zillions of these, so they are inexpensive. However, the stuff coming out of Asia today is stenciled and airbrushed.
If you happen to drop or break it, pick it up carefully. It will cut like a steel blade. _________________ randy go
