In Block's book (1997) pg. 122, he says that these are Ravenswood marbles. But I seem to remember having seen them called "Big Boys" in a bag from either Master or Marble King. Can anyone clear this up for me? (the marbles are all about 1"). Thanks, ... Roger

I'm getting the name Paul Bunyons in my head for some reason? I think Ravenswood made them. No quoting me on that though. |

It seems that many people have said that
Ravenswood didn't make make them larger
than 11/16", so they couldn't be the maker
of the "Big Boys". (From what I understand,
the Paul Bunyan bag was sold by Ravenswood
but said to contain either Master or Akro shooters. )
But in the Ravenswood article written by David
Chamberlain, he says, "
Quote: | For the longest time, I pooh-pohed the idea that there were Ravenswood marbles larger than 11/16”. Oops! See Photo #3, a gift from Mike Johnson and measuring 7/8”. And he has the big brother to this marble measuring 15/16”. I call mine my Ninja Marble! |
Then it goes on to show a "Buddy Bag" with Ravenswoods. Not sure of the size of these.
Quote: | Here in Photo #15, is a Ravenswood marble package done in quantity (3000) for the Haslip Hardware Store in Huntington, WV, in 1953. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an advertising disaster for Ravenswood. You’ll love the full story which I’m sworn not to give away but which will be fully detailed in Mike Johnson’s books coming out this year. |

Anyway, here's a link to the article:

I have always considered those to be Alley swirls. They show up in MK bags like the one pictured (couple different style headers) during the same time as the smaller Alley swirls in bags (thought to be Heaton in the past0 were sold by MK before they started making their own marbles. The Paul Bunyan bags had a little different type marbles - one source said Akro patch type and another said Master - those marbles are totally different from these.

By the way, I still think the marble that Mike Johnson gave David was Alley (similar to the blue one in the bag). I think someone was still thinking of the old Big Boy - Paul Bunyan bag stories and thought this was Ravenswood. |

Here's a picture of the Bunyan bag from Greenberg's Guide to Marbles.
I can't remember which book it was that attributed them to Akro
.........but from this picture alone, I'd say that it's probably
50-50 for one maker over the other. _________________ Lizzy

i can't keep track of who was supposed to have made those for sure. i seem to remember ron shepherd clarifying.
roger, edit the subject to say "?? for Poplarhead" - those are some of don's favorites. he'll know for sure who made them. |

I always wondered about these myself, some of them can almost appear to have a couple different shades of color. |

Here are two Ravenswood shooters (right one for sure). The one on the left is 0.98 and the one on the right is 0.91. Marble on left has a slightly mint green base.
