This one did not look like much on the ebay auction but I collect caged handmades and it went cheep. Now that I have it in hand, what I thought was wear or damage now looks more like an as made defect. There is no basal pontil so I am assuming first off cane and the top pontil has not been finished at all. The entire marble feels sand blasted but it is so uniform with no other damage I think it was this way when it was made. Anyone have any thoughts on what's up with it?

Hi GDP, looks like many seen coming from German digs. The unfinished pontil and the sandblasted look is typical for these dug German handmades. Not an end of cane, the pressed pontil is there so is the cut pontil, it's the pontil with nub intact.
p.s. what does gdp stand for? Grand Daddy Purple?

I agree that it was likely dug. I've have never seen a nub like that on a batch found in the wild. .. Roger

simply my initials. an archaic hold over from the early days of computing when there wasn't an internet as such, just a system of bulletin boards that we posted to and hoped we would get an answer back within a few days. Most of us signed with our initials and I've just held on to that for a long time now.

No offence meant gdp1 my bad at trying to be funny. The next time you're in Spokane look me up at Aunt Bea's Antiques. Am sure I've a caged handmade with your name on it. If I remember correctly you're name is Gary and you are a horseman. I like handmades even the dug ones!
