I have had this 3/4" marble for a couple of years. It has a lot of missing glass. If you look at the cut line in the center image, on the top side, it is an obvious CA line; and the glass looks to be CA to me (no expert). It has two shades of red glass, the stripe is electric. However it just doesn't look like any striped transparent in the books. I am nuts about this thing. Can anyone help? Any thoughts at all about it would be appreciated. Thanks!

From here, it looks like it might be one of the European/German? slag types that some call "Striped Transparents". They mimic CAs and one of the characteristics is that the white pattern doesn't seem to quite meet at the seams. (in other words, there's like a 'gap' there) The other difference is that many of the CAs have a wiggly, "S" or whorl type pattern at one pole.

I could be wrong here, but Galen, Roger or some of the other Euro Gurus might pipe in here too.

yes, this is without a doubt a German striped transparent. Made around 1920-1930. They are amongst the earliest machine made European marbles. They are really hard to find.

Wow. Thanks JV and Lizzy! Never entered my mind because of the electric stripe of red on top of that white-white stripe. Any other examples of similar marbles -- I have some of the white on blue--love all of the German marbles handmade and machine!

Hi Galen,
Wonderful group! The red one you show surely is the same glass as my poor red. The red/green is a striped opaque? I didn't know much at all about the German transparents until last year, though I recall seeing someone with jars of them at shows years ago. Browns and ambers then as I recall. Somehow I remembered those as looking more like 360 degree Master brushed patches. Thanks bunches.

Here's a few German striped transparents. The first 2 are 3/4" with identical deep cherry red base, and they were found together. They show some of the variation that could occur, even on what was likely same-rune. The next, red one, is more the prototypical appearance (with quite a strong pattern). These 3 are the older style of German striped transparent. Later on, the glass became paler shades, and the striping was thinner, and I don't think they made red. The last pic is one of those later versions (peach). Note that for the last one, there is almost no gap where the stripes meet - this one came with about 20 others (no not all peach), most of which had substatial gaps. The later kind also appear as single-cutoff examples (I think I see one in Galen's pic), but I haven't seen single-cutoff in the older style. Taunya, I know the ones you mean, that look a bit like Masters, but I think they are even more recent. In my opinion, your red one has characteristics that are somewhere in between typical German and typical CA, leaning slightly to German. ... Roger
