I have so many neat dug Akros I’d like to post here, but it would take me days to get the task completed!
Anyway, I went digging yesterday at a little secret spot I have, one last effort before I get back to work next Friday. The marbles are hit and miss anymore, more miss than hit; dig for an hour find one or two marbles. Yesterday I was about a foot and a half, two feet down. Only using a little hand digger/cultivator and had made it about a foot into the dirt. I’d not found any marbles, then this little fellow popped up. At first I just thought, hey, cool blue slag before I got a good look at it. (It was, by the way, the only marble I found yesterday after an hour or so.) It looks to me like I very strange marble, and at first glance, had I not dug it, I would have probably said not Akro but something newer. I took it down to my buddy’s, and his wife said she remembered selling one like it a few years ago (they used to sell under the name marbles*galore). I’ve never seen, that I can remember, the “texture” of the glass inside of it before, at least not in an Akro. Or maybe I have. I dug a neat green marble once that had a texture something like it, but only one strand of it, whereas this one is swirled throughout. I think the photos may show some of the depth. I’d like to have gotten some photos with the light shining up through it to show the inside action. There’s some brown/green swirling as well. I thought it would be interesting to share this one, and wondered if anyone else had seen anything like it.
The shadow in the photos near the stand make it look out of round, but it’s not, at least no more than a number of the marbles I see. Hope they’re not too blurry.
William
Thanks! |

Indeed it was. Alan has some super examples & pics of dug Akros. I always love to see them!
William, yours seems *vaguely* familiar............but I can't quite figure out why. I can see it being possibly Akro.............kind of similar in structure to the "Cyclone". Since so few of those have surfaced, it makes me think that this could be another "Experimental".
Hold onto it till next years show so I can see it "in-hand" ............I'm gonna try and be there! _________________ Lizzy

the oxblood at the top of the photo looks like the same marble that I posted and was told it was probably an Akro. Well, was your half oxblood dug marble an experimental or were these marketed? I am a little confused about dug marbles. Where any of them marketed or were they all tossed for various reasons? If so, I will have a hard time explaining how that Akro oxblood brown marble ended up in my collection. I guess what I am asking is: could the half marbles have been tossed because they were broke, or were they dumped whole and then broke at later times? Or is this an impossible question? I am trying to reason out these Akro dug marbles versus the ones that could be bought. If you look at the pix of the oxblood I posted recently, it looks identical-except it is only a half!
