I just bought a black light yesterday on eBay, and don't know anything about anything. Any help would be appreciated. Possibly a link to somewhere that can give some help. TY _________________ ...."Gene".... |

Different oxides(usually metallic) are added to glass as colorant or as clarity agents. Some are UV sensitive. Different oxides can make different colors. It is uranium oxide that make the famous Vaseline glass and its wonderful green glow. That is it. marble King did make some on purpose at one time. A short run. There are companies that make UV sensitive glass now, doing it on purpose Peace,Galen _________________ Peace,Galen |

Now, a couple weeks later. I have learned that the black light shows subsurface fractures and cracks not seen with the naked eye... _________________ ...."Gene".... |

It's always good to see things in a different light so to speak. There are things you'd see in natural sunlight that wouldn't be noticed under most indoor conditions. |

This is a topic that I have wanted learn a bit about. I have been using a really large uv light (my daughters--she lights up her artwork and posters with it) that shows several differant yet consistant glows in a lot of the older machine made marbles I have. The green is known to me, but I also have marbles that glow in these colors: a translucent orange, a bright deep yellow, a pale creamy yellow, and an intense shade of orange. I am wondering if the purple is just an illusion as the uv light passes through the transparent glass and casts a reflection?
Does anyone know how these glowing colors relate to the age or the maker of marbles that are collectible?
I am going to purchase one of the little pocket sized high powered lights. I'm getting tired of lugging the big tube around. _________________ Don't Tread On Me |

Those are really great! Okay, can you date them by the use of uranium in what I gather are handmade marbles? Also, are they European or American? I think that all of the handmades that I see lots of examples of with the lattice cages, and vanes, etc., are all European. True?
Now, do you know when the first American marbles were made with the uranium glass and who made them?
too many questions, but I needs to know. _________________ Don't Tread On Me |

Uranium glass(Vaseline glass) was made untill WWII stopped for years then started again in 1958. [http://www.vaselineglass.org/]Akro was the first to put it(uranium oxide) in marbles I believe. _________________ Peace,Galen |
