It's hard to tell without being able to turn them in my hand. Most of the them are tigereyes. Some others look like a different type. Randy will see this again. Some of them look like 3 colors - sort of like parrots with missing colors. I think they are also tiger eyes but a different type. Randy posted some great info on this a long time back. i wish I had saved it or if I did, I wish I could find it. LOL All of those are pretty. Sissy

Oops,

I was wrong about Edna's marbles, which Orbboy cropped. Those are type 3 mibs. The marbles with purple/yellow, purple/orangish-red poles, and a yellow/blue combination have drawn special attention. They are not easy to find. Chuck and Diane call them special conquerors, but they clearly fit the type 3 definition. They have a particularly brushed look, as the colors are thin, but the construction is the same, so I won't classify them as a different mib.

Here are the definitions of Tiger eyes:

"Construction of Vitro Tiger Eyes - The basic construction is a marble with thin veneered patches on the top & bottom and a thin veneered half & half ribbon in the middle."

"Type 1 -- A clear base glass with a color patch on top, a white patch on the bottom and a two color (half & half) ribbon in the middle." Commonly called Tri-colors, Parakeets, or 3-color patch and ribbons by collectors

"Type 2 -- A clear base glass with a color patch on top, a different color patch on the bottom and a one color (half & half) ribbon in the middle." Not very common - a fancy version of Type 1. Rarer still if it has a two color (half & half) ribbon.

"Type 3 -- A clear base glass with a color patch on top, a different color patch on the bottom and a white (half & half) ribbon in the middle." Sometimes the white ribbon appears to be outlined in black, but it is the clear glass.

"Type 4 -- An opaque white base glass with a color patch on top, a different color patch on the bottom and a white (half & half) ribbon in the middle."

The cheat sheet:

White pole = Type 1
Colored poles with colored ribbons = Type 2
Colored poles with white ribbons = Type 3
Colored poles on opaque/translucent base = Type 4

This only applies to the 5/8 sized mibs. Frequently, the larger mibs are on an opaque base. And very frequently, when the made shooters, they added a touch of another color. Consequently, very frequently, the shooters are marketed and mistaken for 3 color parrots. 95% of the three colored parrots I see on the bay are Tiger eye shooters. Side by side color comparisons is the key.

Windy, I see some of your tiger eyes have white ribbons at the equator. Vitro made some that let the white based marble show as ribbons and they also made some that had applied white ribbons. They are my favorite, but I guess they cost more to produce. Some of yours have white ribbons applied. My favorites of the white ribbon variety are the ones with a red eye, a green eye, and white applied ribbons.

By the way, I intended to spend some time today taking pics of tiger eyes, opals, and cosmic rainbows but I won't be doing it. Late last evening we had an email telling us that Weldon's 100 year old uncle had passed away. So we'll be spending our time packing and traveling. We had already planned a grandson trip to Colorado. Looks like we'll be combining the two. See you guys sometime after Aug 26.

Randy, thanks for posting that tiger eye info again. Maybe I can store it in my head now. LOL
