Doogle is my user name, Douglas is my real name and what my wife calls me when I am in trouble. Seems to me I get called Douglas a lot. Anyway, like a lot of others on this site, I grabbed my fathers Folger's Coffee can of marbles from my grandma after he passed away. I always knew they were in that can, but grannie wouldn't let me or my brother play with them. We could look, but not touch. Probably a good idea, now that I have had time to ponder.
My mother is an artist, and worked in glass for many years. She was always buying marbles either from auctions or from Pier One, Wal-Mart, glass shops, etc., and dumped them all into a large drawer. I know have all of those, too. My wife and I carry on the stained glass work, but I have culled out the interesting marbles from the marble drawer.
I just recently, within the last year, started to try and figure out what kinds of marbles I have, including the newer ones. So far, it has my head spinning, and these dang marbles are doing their best to make me look silly.
I am just starting to sort them out, after spending a lot of time reading free articles on the net. I cannot afford the books, so I grab whatever info is floating around out in space. I was recommended to this sight by another member of Marvelous Mibs, who belongs to a Texas arrowhead collecting forum that I post in. For some reason, marbles are found by arrowhead collectors and vica versa, so I posted a marble question on the arrowhead site and ended up here.
I have just begun to post photos and ask questions, but I have a lot that I want to learn, so all members here will be seeing more of me in the future. Like many others from California, it is a land barren of mib manufacturing, but they do end up in the darndest places, so I always keep an eye open. I recently found a nice clay marble while hunting on near a creek near a Native American site, and still cannot find out if it is European or Amerind in manufacture. I have a hunch that our Amerind ancestors made clay marbles for games, too. Remind me to post that one.....
My current top of the list quest is to properly identify oxblood. It seems to be everywhere and nowhere. Kind of funny, that stuff. I will be asking lots of questions, and hope to soon be able to answer them as well.

Hi All...
My name is "Gene". I have been collecting marbles for about 2 years, and can honestly say I still don't know much. But I do have a lot of really fine marbles, and need help identifying some of them. I am a 60 year young w/male, happily married to wife "Dyann". I am looking forward to participating in the forums and meeting a lot of you fine people.

Hi everybody! I'm Brenda. I think I've been bitten by the marble collecting bug. Actually, it's just my latest collecting obssession. I also collect depression glass, vintage linens, tins and whatever else happens to strike my fancy.
I can justify marbles, because they take up very little space. i'm still poking around and figuring out the ropes here. I am thrilled that I found this site. I never realised that there were soooooooo many different types of marbles. |

Hello to everyone,
My name is Wendy. Thank you for accepting my request to join. I've always been interested in marbles, playing & sorting through my grandma's small can full when I was a child. Fast forward many years later at her estate auction those same marbles came up for bidding-something came over me & I decided no one but myself was leaving there with them marbles.
For many years they have sat in an antique Mason jar in a place of honor on my bookshelf, I was interested in adding to the collection but it seemed every auction, sale & store had such high prices i never seemed to be able to get anywhere with my endeavors.
This summer at a garage sale I snagged a blue quart Mason jar (#13 at that!) full of marbles for $1.00! Thus began the frenzy! I have added significantly to the collection by way of e-bay. My name on e-bay is *sneaky*snakes* so if i have bought off any of you-Thanks!!
Last weekend was the last day for our local flea market, I was able to leave the house that day so long story short I got a large pickle size jar full of various newer marbles, cheap. As we were leaving a guy was just unpacking his wares, he had many mineral specimens-which I've collected for many years. I asked him if he had any marbles he said he did, he walked to his van & when he turned around I about fell over. At first my heart leaped then started to crash as I seen it was full of big 'ole shooters, clays etc...I thought "wow, he'll want at least $100.00 or he's selling them individually" with faint heart I asked "how much for the whole jar?" he looked at me for a few seconds then said "$6.00's sound ok with you?" I had to ask him to repeat himself- yup! i heard correctly!! so not only did I get a whole slew of many older & some antique marbles but the jar they came in was an old glass with wire top bale. The jar was 13" tall & stuffed plumb full of marbles!! That was a major "score" for me, & I'm smart enough to know a deal like that don't happen along very often.
Some of the other things I collect are: rock/mineral specimens, Carnival Glass, Mortar & Pestles, Hagen Renakers (I have over 600), vintage Harley Memorabilia, books & gargoyles.
I'm still in the very early stages of trying to learn the little quirks & attributes of the different marbles & manufacturers. Most of my learning is through the internet with help from E. Grists 3rd edition. I look forward to getting to know the folks on here, & learning & sharing information. Thank you for your time!! ~wendy _________________ "Wisdom Outweighs Any Wealth" ~Sophocles |
